Wave Recruitment

Fluid Mechanics Engineer

About the Role

A rapidly growing deep-tech company is seeking a Fluid Mechanics Engineer – Experimentalist to support the development and operation of multiphase flow diagnostic systems. This role will be instrumental in setting up, managing, and optimising experimental fluid mechanics testbeds, ensuring they deliver high-quality data for advanced sensing, imaging, and process monitoring applications.

The position is ideal for an engineer with a strong background in fluid mechanics, experimental design, and system optimisation, who enjoys working in an agile R&D environment. The role will involve setting up and maintaining flow facilities, supporting multidisciplinary R&D teams, and ensuring robust data collection processes for applications in decarbonisation, medical imaging, and industrial process control.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and maintain flow testing facilities, ensuring they are always test-ready and capable of delivering high-precision experimental data
  • Plan and schedule facility operations, aligning with internal and external R&D project requirements
  • Support experimental campaigns by preparing test protocols, setting up measurement systems, and ensuring smooth execution
  • Monitor system performance, conducting routine inspections, calibrations, and troubleshooting equipment issues
  • Collaborate with engineers and scientists to continuously improve experimental setups, integrating new sensing and diagnostic techniques
  • Ensure facility safety, reliability, and compliance with industry standards and best practices
  • Work towards obtaining ISO 17025 certification for laboratory testing and calibration, managing documentation and liaising with accreditation bodies
  • Analyse and visualise large datasets, supporting signal processing and AI-driven analytics for digital twin applications
  • Engage with internal stakeholders and customers, ensuring that test capabilities align with their evolving needs
  • Participate in SCRUM-driven R&D activities, contributing to continuous improvement in experimental methodologies

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Strong background in fluid mechanics and experimental flow diagnostics
  • Experience in setting up and managing test facilities, ensuring operational efficiency and reliability
  • Proficiency in measurement and data acquisition systems, including flow sensors, pressure transducers, and imaging tools
  • Ability to interpret experimental results, applying analytical techniques to support product development
  • Knowledge of calibration procedures, test protocols, and industry standards
  • Familiarity with system schematics, PFDs/P&IDs, and control logic
  • Experience working in a collaborative, multidisciplinary R&D team
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills, with the ability to troubleshoot experimental challenges
  • Excellent organisational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently

Desirable Skills

  • Exposure to multiphase flow systems and supercritical CO2 dynamics
  • Understanding of AI-driven analytics and machine learning applications for experimental data processing
  • Experience in digital twin development for industrial fluid systems
  • Previous involvement in accreditation and certification processes (e.g., ISO 17025)
  • Hands-on experience with high-speed data acquisition and large-scale experimental datasets

Benefits

  • 25 days annual leave (+ bank holidays, with service-based increments)
  • Flexible working options, including hybrid/remote days
  • Modern R&D workspace with free on-site parking
  • Contributory pension scheme and optional healthcare
  • Cycle to Work Scheme
  • Performance-based share options after three years
  • Team-building initiatives and company-sponsored activities
