Senior CFD Engineer – OpenFOAM Specialist
About the Role
A forward-thinking deep-tech company is seeking a Senior CFD Engineer with expertise in OpenFOAM to drive innovation in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and multiphysics simulations. This role is instrumental in developing advanced digital prototyping solutions for industries such as decarbonisation, medical imaging, defence, and industrial process monitoring.
You’ll work as part of a highly skilled R&D team, applying high-performance computing (HPC) to enhance super-sensing devices through CFD simulations. This includes optimising sensor designs, developing robust computational models, and supporting machine learning-driven digital twin applications.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and refine CFD models to simulate fluid flow, multiphase interactions, and material properties
- Validate simulation results by integrating experimental data and visualising outcomes for better design optimisation
- Optimise high-fidelity multiphysics simulations for complex applications using OpenFOAM and other computational frameworks
- Implement high-performance parallel computing (HPC) techniques to enhance simulation speed and efficiency
- Develop advanced numerical solvers and libraries to handle thermophysical properties of real fluids and multi-material systems
- Collaborate across disciplines, working with engineers, experimentalists, and computational scientists to refine and validate models
- Support machine learning (ML) applications by generating high-quality datasets for AI-driven analysis and digital twins
- Participate in agile development cycles, integrating SCRUM methodologies to improve workflow and project delivery
- Engage with stakeholders to align technical solutions with real-world industry challenges
- Present findings and technical advancements at industry conferences, workshops, and customer meetings
Essential Skills & Experience
- Extensive experience in OpenFOAM, including solver development and multiphase flow simulations
- Strong C++ programming skills, particularly in template meta-programming within OpenFOAM
- Expertise in high-performance computing (HPC) for parallelised CFD simulations
- Proficiency in geometric modelling, meshing, and visualisation tools for simulation pre- and post-processing
- Experience with multiphysics modelling, such as fluid-structure interaction, heat transfer, and electromagnetic fields
- Strong foundation in numerical methods, turbulence modelling, and fluid mechanics
- Ability to optimise computational efficiency and develop scalable solutions for complex simulations
- Experience working in a SCRUM environment, collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams
Desirable Skills
- Background in deep learning and AI-driven regression models for enhancing CFD predictions
- Experience with TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar ML frameworks for managing large simulation datasets
- Prior exposure to HPC system administration and performance tuning
- Knowledge of multiphysics coupling techniques for integrating CFD with other domains such as electromagnetics or acoustics
- Experience in cross-industry applications of CFD, from industrial process modelling to medical and defence sectors
