Job Specification:

Role overview
Responsible for the design, development, testing, and support of physical devices from concept through to production. Works closely with electronics, firmware, manufacturing, quality, and product teams to deliver reliable, scalable hardware.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and develop device hardware, including mechanical and system-level components

  • Own device requirements, specs, and design documentation

  • Build and test prototypes; plan and execute verification and validation testing

  • Support transition from prototype to manufacturing (DFM, DFA, supplier engagement)

  • Investigate failures and lead root cause analysis

  • Drive design improvements based on testing, field data, and manufacturing feedback

  • Work with regulatory and quality teams where applicable (e.g. medical, automotive)

  • Manage technical risks and contribute to project planning and timelines

Required skills & experience

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or similar

  • Experience developing physical devices from early design through production

  • Strong understanding of materials, tolerances, and manufacturing processes

  • Hands-on prototyping and test experience

  • Ability to write clear technical documentation and design reports

  • Comfortable working in cross-functional product teams

  • Solid problem-solving and root cause analysis skills

Desirable experience (varies by industry)

  • Regulated product development (ISO 13485, FDA, CE, etc.)

  • Embedded systems integration (working with firmware and electronics teams)

  • Supplier and contract manufacturer engagement

  • Reliability engineering and environmental testing

  • Experience with certification testing and compliance

Tools & methods

  • CAD tools (e.g. SolidWorks, Creo, Fusion)

  • Test equipment and data analysis tools

  • Requirements and risk management (e.g. FMEA, design controls)

  • PLM and documentation systems

What success looks like

  • Devices meet performance, safety, and reliability targets

  • Smooth handover to manufacturing with minimal late-stage redesign

  • Clear documentation that supports quality, regulatory, and service teams

  • Practical engineering decisions that balance performance, cost, and schedule
Location: Newcastle upon Tyne
Salary : £55,000- £60,000 + bonus
